The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation has the objective, “To protect and preserve the environment, enhance and restore natural ecosystems and wildlife habitat to preserve indigenous species of flora and fauna in Saskatchewan.”
Protect and Preserve the Environment
The native grasslands are becoming more scarce and fragmented from the threat of cultivation and we are committed to protecting and preserving the remaining natural landscape.
Enhance and Restore Natural Ecosystems
Without proper management practices, the native grasslands are more susceptible to lowering in quality. We have to make sure what is left is still in good range condition and able to support wildlife and the ranchers who are actively working on the land.
Wildlife Habitat
Many species that historically call the grasslands home are now threatened or at risk due to habitat loss over the years. They all contribute to the dynamic ecosystem and have a role to play within the landscape. Being able to restore the native grasslands positively impacts the wildlife population.
Education
We strongly believe that educating ranchers, local communities and ultimately the general population will create an appreciation for our native grasslands and bring to light how much diversity they provide for the environment. We will actively work with ranchers to educate others on how important their lifestyle is for our grassland health.
Public Awareness
Most people don’t correlate grazing cattle and conservation projects together but we plan on bringing awareness to the loss of native grasslands and the environmental impacts of that loss. From providing habitat for species at risk to carbon sequestration and storage, we can all enjoy the ecological benefits that the grasslands supply.
Preserve Indigenous Species of Flora and Fauna
By protecting the grasslands, we also protect the indigenous plants and animals to that ecosystem. They create a diverse and incredible landscape that can be nearly impossible to replicate once lost.
How We Will Reach Our Goals
Engaging in public consultation with local communities in southwestern Saskatchewan
Increase awareness for the importance of native grassland preservation
Promote our programs and highlight activities undertaken by collaborating producers
Engagement with First Nations to explore cultural interests in native grasslands
Plan and host workshops for producers to actively participate in
Host educational webinars to bring awareness to our programs and reach a larger audience
Work actively with other organizations to deliver our programs
Ultimately sign easements and agreements with producers to protect native grasslands and habitat for species at risk
