Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation to Announce First Term Conservation Easement Protecting 640 acres of Native Grasslands for 25 Years
WHO:
Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation
Participating landowners
Representatives from the Weston Family Foundation
WHAT:
A presentation by the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation (SSGF) to announce the signing of their first Term Conservation Easement, with attendance from both the partnering landowners and representatives from a core program funder. This easement will protect 640 acres of intact native grasslands near Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan, for the next 25 years, marking a major milestone in advancing flexible, long term grassland conservation in the province.
WHY:
Native grasslands are one of the most at risk ecosystems in the world and Saskatchewan alone has less than 20% of remaining native grasslands left intact. These landscapes are not only vital for biodiversity and ecological goods and services, but also for the ranchers who manage them sustainably. In a ground breaking move that may be the first of its kind in Canada, the SSGF has officially signed their first Term Conservation Easement. This easement reflects strong interest from ranching communities in conservation programs that align with working landscapes and long term ranching viability. This easement opens a new chapter in Canadian grassland conservation, one that balances environmental stewardship with the needs of agricultural producers.
